School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at KTH

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Media Technology

Sound and music exert strong effects on the human brain. Lullabies are known in all cultures as an effective sleep aid for children and adults. However, little is known on how and why they work.

This project is part of the EU MSCA Doctoral Network “Lullabyte” which, for the first time, brings together leading researchers from sound and music computing, musicology, sleep research, neuroscience and computer science to fill this gap. In the network, 10 Doctoral Candidates will be trained in a radically interdisciplinary research field, and acquire in-depth skills relevant for academia, industry, and the cultural sector. Leveraging state-of-the-art neuroscience laboratories, big sleep datasets gathered with wearable technology, and on our research on sonic interaction design and sonification, in this project we will develop novel sonic applications that promote healthy sleeping behaviours.

Your main tasks will be to identify the acoustic features involved in promoting sleep; to ascertain whether they have a similar role in different sound signals (e.g. environmental sounds v.s. music); and to apply this knowledge to develop personalised and innovative interactive sonic applications for healthy sleep.

This project includes secondments with Miriam Akkermann (TU Dresden, Germany) to examine role of sound and music in relation to sleep, and Thomas Andrillon (Brain Institute Paris, France) to deepen our understanding of sleep data.

Supervision: Associate Professor Sandra Pauletto
