School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at KTH

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Electrical Engineering

A 4-year PhD position is available in the framework of the MSCA Doctoral Network GENIUS “Glide-symmetric mEtamaterials for iNnovative radIo-frequency commUnication and Sensing”, funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe Programme and by the UK Research and Innovation.

The candidate will address the problem of leakage in high-power distribution network on satellites by means of integrated glide-symmetric (GS) elements.

The sucessful candidate will:

  • study power-distribution topologies compatible with the expected advantages of the GS technology at Ka-band,
  • design the required components (phase shifters, couplers) in GS technology following satellite constraints (all-metal design, high-power capabilities, space and weight limitations). And optimize high-voltage integration with power amplifiers. Different technologies will be attempted, such as holey surfaces, pin-like surfaces, and artificial waveguides.
  • be in charge of the fabrication and measurement of the designed prototype.

The research project will be done at Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm Sweden for 9 months, at Sinowave (SNW), Gothenburg, Sweden for 9 months, at Airbus Defence and Space (AIRBUS), UK for 1.5 years and again at KTH, Stockholm Sweden for 12 months. The employment will follow the movement at the respective host.

Transferable-skill training will be provided both at KTH, SNW and AIRBUS as part of the doctoral programme.

Supervision: Oscar Quevedo Teruel (KTH), Simon He (SNW), and Sonya Amos (AIRBUS).
