Energy networks in cities – gas, electricity and heating/cooling - are often planned and operated separately. This can lead to inefficient use of resources, unforeseen operability issues, and a larger mismatch between demand and production. Uncoordinated planning often leads also to an increasing number of decentralized and non-flexible production systems with prosumers having a larger impact on the long-term sustainability of the network, both technically and economically. In turn, smart integrated solutions for energy management and conversion that increase interoperability capabilities between energy vectors, and open opportunities to develop innovative services are needed for adequate infrastructure planning.
In this postdoctoral position, you will conduct research in the development of methods for modeling energy distribution and transmission networks, that allow the quantification of the technical, economic and environmental impact of the adoption of new enabling centralized and distributed energy management and conversion technologies (e.g. energy storage, V2G, CHP plants, heat pumps P2X), to ultimately support decision-making in infrastructure planning, policy and technology development.
