Third-cycle subject: Physics, specialization in Nuclear Engineering
We are looking for a PhD student to work in the research centre SUNRISE (www.sunrise-centre.se) on modelling and experiments of damage mechanisms in advanced steels for lead fast reactors (LFRs). The SUNRISE centre works with a focused goal of establishing a research LFR in Sweden and joins KTH, Luleå university of Technology and Uppsala university with the nuclear industry in Sweden as well as international partners. The student will join a multi-disciplinary team of researchers and students.
The radiation tolerance and susceptibility to liquid metal embrittlement in different types of alumina forming steels will be modelled using electronic structure based multi-scale methods and investigated experimentally using ion beam implantation. The experiments will be used to determine microstructural evolution as well as the effect of radiation damage on mechanical properties and to validate the modelling. The steels are developed in house and their future composition optimization may be affected by the outcomes of this work.
Supervision: Professor Pär Olsson is proposed to supervise the doctoral student in collaboration with Dr Peter Szakalos. Decisions are made on admission.
