School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at KTH

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Computer Science

We look for a doctoral student to join a project in robotics that aims to achieve end-to-end risk-awareness guarantees by tight integration of the high-level planning layer and the control layer. The research objectives of the project are to develop:

  • algorithms that automatically decompose high-level temporal logic specification formulas into high-level plans and requirements for lower-level control layers;
  • control algorithms minimizing risk of violating these requirements; and
  • a feedback loop from the control layer to the high-level planning layer that allows to quantify risk-awareness with respect to satisfaction of the high-level specification.

The position is at the division of Robotics, Perception and Learning (RPL) with Jana Tumova’s research group that focuses on designing planning, decision making, and control algorithms to enable safe, purposeful and trustworthy autonomous behavior. The core of our approach is the use of formal methods-inspired techniques that allow for rigorous specification of a rich set of goals, constraints, and preferences, and automated synthesis of plans, policies, and controllers with performance guarantees. We utilize them in applications ranging from autonomous driving, exploration with UAVs or navigation around people, to network control.

The position is part of and funded by the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP), the largest individual research program in Sweden.

Supervision: Jana Tumova is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission
