Moving towards climate neutral society, railway is going through electrification. To enhance the energy efficiency and reduce CO2 emission of electrical railway systems, it is promising to integrate energy storage system and develop advanced energy management systems with goals of 1) environmental benefits, 2) increased economic profit and reduced operation cost, 3) minimized grid impact as well as enhanced grid reliability and stability under decarbonization.
The objective of this project is to develop and integrate innovative solutions (including the use of energy storage system, formation of an energy hub with renewable energy, active participation in electrical grids, optimisation and management tools) into the legacy railway system, to improve and enhance the infrastructure traction power supply. The PhD candidate working in this project will develop advanced optimization tools for electrical railway systems, and energy management systems for smart energy hubs.
This project is part of Europe’s Rail Flagship Project, and is funded by EU Horizon. It will collaborate with European leading transport authorities and industries, including Trafikverket (Sweden), SNCF (France), and Alstorm.

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. In the case of studies that are to be completed with a licentiate degree, the total period of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
