The 5-year research project, Music at the Frontiers of Artificial Creativity and Criticism (MUSAiC, ERC-2019-COG No. 864189), analyzes, criticizes and seeks to fundamentally broaden the transformation of three interrelated music practices by artificial intelligence (AI): 1) listening, 2) composition and performance, and 3) analysis and criticism. This two year postdoctoral position focuses on the musicological study of music generated by or with AI. How appropriate are current musicological practices for the analysis of such work? What new methodologies are needed? What does it mean to define a ”canon” when it comes to music generated by machines? How can a ”canon” be constructed? What is the use of studying music that by and large only machines will ever listen to? Does the world need a new kind of musicology?
The postdoctoral student will be based at the Speech, Music and Hearing research division of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, at KTH. The postdoctoral position is to be filled by fall 2023. The Principal Investigator (PI) is an associate professor of computer science with a multidisciplinary background in physics, music, digital signal processing, and machine learning. He also studies Irish traditional music and the accordion.
The intended outcomes of the position for which the postdoctoral candidate will share responsibility with the PI include:
Papers published at research venues focused on musicology, music informatics, science and technology studies, etc. on the topics of focus; Journal articles in appropriate disciplines, e.g., Transactions of the International Society for Music Information Retrieval, Empirical Musicology Review, and Sound Studies on the topics of focus. Workshops, conferences, and concerts organized in Sweden and abroad.
