School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at KTH

Job description

The 5-year research project, Music at the Frontiers of Artificial Creativity and Criticism (MUSAiC, ERC-2019-COG No. 864189), analyzes, criticizes and seeks to fundamentally broaden the transformation of three interrelated music practices by artificial intelligence (AI): 1) listening, 2) composition and performance, and 3) analysis and criticism. The postdoctoral student will become part of MUSAiC, based at the Speech, Music and Hearing research division of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, at KTH. The postdoctoral position is to be filled by the fall 2023. The Principal Investigator (PI) is an associate professor of computer science, with a multidisciplinary background in physics, music, digital signal processing, and machine learning. He also studies Irish traditional music and the accordion.

The successful candidate will perform research in artificial intelligence and machine learning applied to music beyond 12-tone equal temperament. How can the combinatorial space of melodic and chordal possibilities be efficiently searched for a user? How can a physical device or controller be rendered to make accessible these possibilities? The candidate will contribute to the development of music pedagogy for AI moving beyond 12-tone equal temperament, as well as the organization of workshops, conferences, festivals, and concerts. The candidate will also contribute to the maintenance of the computational resources of the project.
