School of Engineering Sciences at KTH

Job description

The project focuses on developing fundamental optimization methods and algorithms. Specifically, the project focuses on strong convex relaxations of mixed-integer optimization problems and non-convex nonlinear problems. The goal is to derive strong convex relaxations for some specific problem structures and so-called cutting plane methods. Implementing and testing algorithms is an important part of the project. The project, and postdoc position, is for two years.

The position is at the Department of Mathematics in the Division of Optimization and Systems Theory. The project at KTH is led by Assistant Professor Jan Kronqvist.

What we offer

  • A position at a leading technical university that generates knowledge and skills for a sustainable future
  • Engaged and ambitious colleagues along with a creative, international and dynamic working environment
  • Work in Stockholm, in close proximity to nature
  • Work in a creative environment to find new innovative solutions by developing fundamental optimization techniques.
  • The opportunity to focus on fundamental research in optimization.
  • Help to relocate and be settled in Sweden and at KTH

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
  • You are expected to have a strong knowledge of mathematical programming, and have experience in either linear or nonlinear programming and mixed-integer optimization. You need to have published journal/conference papers with a focus on optimization (theory, methods, or applications).
  • Experience of working with Python.
  • Proof of research expertise, for example published papers in good journals and peer-reviewed conferences.
  • Ability to collaborate with others and work independently.

Preferred qualifications

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline
  • Experience/knowledge of one or several of the topics: mixed-integer optimization, robust optimization, nonconvex optimization, convex optimization, SDP relaxations, conic optimization, optimization software, Git.
  • Previous experience of method/algorithm development for optimization applications.
  • Experience of presenting results at international conferences.
  • You should have good analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skill. The research focuses on methods and theory, but you need to have sufficient knowledge/skills in programming (mainly Python).
  • As person you have a strong ability to work independently and successfully collaborate with others.
  • We expect the application to have an awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with specific focus on gender equality.
  • Teaching abilities

Great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.

About the employment

The position offered is for, at the most, two years.

A position as a postdoctoral fellow is a time-limited qualified appointment focusing mainly on research, intended as a first career step after a dissertation. The position is research focused, and there are possibilities to participate in teaching/supervision (but no more than a maximum of 20% of the time).
