Do you want to contribute to the transition to sustainable transport systems while developing your skills in research, modeling and data analysis? We invite you to consider the position as Research Engineer in modeling and analysis of sustainable freight transport systems at the Integrated Transport Research Lab (ITRL).

You will be part of the MUST project (Methods for Managing deep Uncertainty in planning for Sustainable Transport), where you will work to develop and apply methods for managing deep uncertainty in analysis and planning of transport systems. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to the development of sustainable transport systems while collaborating with researchers from ITRL and from our project partner VTI. In this role, you will work with the development of a policy analysis model for the Swedish freight transport system and applying the model for various types of computational experiments. You will develop skills within transport modeling, software development and data analysis and visualization.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to model development, primarily using Python, but also integrating models written in other languages where necessary.
  • Aid in the development and customization of existing Python software to set up, run, and analyze computational experiments.
  • Perform and analyze computational experiments.
  • Maintain and continuously improve the project’s codebase.
  • Contribute to project reports and potentially participate in writing scientific articles.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A graduate degree or an advanced level (higher education) degree in the research subject or equivalent competence. Examples of relevant subjects include: Computer Science, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, System Analysis, Transportation Systems or Logistics.
  • Programming experience, with skills in Python.
  • Knowledge in system analysis and some experience with transport systems.
  • You are performance oriented and a quick learner that takes initiative and can work independently and efficiently.
  • Problem solving and numerical analytical abilities.
  • Strong professional English skills, as this will be required in day-to-day work.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience from work or student projects in relevant areas such as Transportation Systems, Logistics, Transport Economics, Choice Modeling, Environmental Systems Analysis, Socio-Technical Systems, and optimization.
  • Experience in model development and simulation methods.
  • Basic understanding of transport theories and models.
  • Experience with software development, including documentation, version control, code maintenance, etc.
  • Collaborative abilities
  • It is beneficial if you are Swedish speaking, as it simplifies collaboration with colleagues, partners and financiers.
  • Awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with specific focus on gender equality
