School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health at KTH

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Biotechnology

The focus of the project is the exploration of continuous bioprocessing for the production of biological drugs with mammalian cells, including continuous culture and purification processes, as well as sustainability aspects. The project will be carried out at KTH in Chotteau’s group, the Cell Technology group CETEG, in close collaboration with the company Servier. CETEG is leader in high cell density perfusion for the production of biopharmaceuticals and directs the Competence Centre for Advanced BioProduction by Continuous Processing, AdBIOPRO, which is an interactive Center with high focus on multidisciplinary collaboration within academia and industry.

Supervision: Associate Professor Veronique Chotteau is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission

What we offer

  • The possibility to study in a dynamic and international research environment in collaboration with industries and prominent universities from all over the world.Read more
  • A workplace with many employee benefits and monthly salary according to KTH’s Doctoral student salary agreement.
  • A postgraduate education at an institution that is active and supportive in matters pertaining to working conditions, gender equality and diversity as well as study environment.
  • Chotteau’s group is Head of CETEG at Dept. Industrial Biotechnology and has a long experience of developing biopharmaceutical drug bioprocesses for human therapy, where she is leader in high cell density perfusion for the production of biopharmaceuticals. CETEG focusses on the process development for biological drugs and viral vectors, including perfusion process at very high cell density of mammalian/human cells and development of dynamic metabolism models. Chotteau is the Director of AdBIOPRO and partners of several other Centres. AdBIOPRO is a Competence Center for Advanced Bioproduction by Continuous Processing, in collaboration with Lund University, Karolinska Institutet, Linköping University and Karolinska Hospital as well as 16 Swedish and international companies in the biopharmaceutical industry. The CETEG group, av. approx. 10 people, is a multidisciplinary team, with researchers, post-docs, PhD students and MSc students. CETEG's activities are characterized by collaboration with academic groups at KTH, in Sweden and in Europe, as well as international companies.
  • Les laboratoires Servier (LLS) is a French company specialized in development, industrialization, and commercialization of drug product from chemical or biological source. The collaboration will take place with the BIO-S, an industrial unit designed to produced clinical batches of biologics, intending to grow LLS’s CMC development capacities. It will also involve Symphogen, a company part of the LLS group with an acknowledged experience in biologics. The  BIO-S is already engaged in many developments partnership mainly focused on Process analytical technology (PAT).
