Third-cycle subject: Transport Science
In order for Sweden to achieve its transport policy sustainability goals, a large number of different solutions are required, where competitive public transport is a fundamental component. An efficient line network is important for two reasons: firstly from a socio-economic point of view, as savings in the form of faster journey times mean profits for the individual, and secondly from an economic point of view in the form of savings for authorities. In practice, the development of line networks takes place with a qualitative, artisanal know-how. At the same time, digital developments have enabled new tools to understand passenger movements (e.g., data from digital ticketing systems) and more computing power to perform complex calculations, creating the potential to use algorithms to create more efficient line networks.
We are now looking for a PhD student who, in collaboration with Region Stockholm and Nobina Sweden, wants to contribute to the development of practically useful algorithms and processes for designing line networks for public transport. The research is intended to include knowledge gathering through literature search and dialogue, further development of algorithms and investigation of new data sources, development of tools for communication of results, and investigation of potential for commercialization.
