School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at KTH

Project description

In this project, the focus will be on wireless industrial networking at scale. 5G standards introduce various features that specifically target the industrial automation sector. The introduction of these features leaves a large space for optimization, leading to interesting trade-offs and novel challenges. The PhD project will be devoted to these aspects, leveraging mathematics, simulation as well as implementation platforms. The project is in a larger context, and hence collaboration within the research group on this topic will be essential.

Our research group has a track record in leading academic research with real-world impact in the area of industrial wireless networking. We are looking for an outstanding individual interested in integrating with a strong team as well as with external stakeholders in order to shape the field. We typically combine fundamental research work (leveraging methods from communication and queuing theory) with experimental testbed development and trials. More and more focus of our group is also put on machine learning in combination with wireless networking.

Third-cycle subject: Electrical Engineering

Supervision: Professor James Gross

What we offer

  • The possibility to study in a dynamic and international research environment in collaboration with industries and prominent universities from all over the world.Read more
  • A workplace with many employee benefits and monthly salary according to KTH’s Doctoral student salary agreement.
  • A postgraduate education at an institution that is active and supportive in matters pertaining to working conditions, gender equality and diversity as well as study environment.
  • Help to relocate and be settled in Sweden and at KTH.
  •  A highly dynamic environment at KTH and the larger Stockholm area where a lot of future developments in wireless and cellular networking are coined.

Admission requirements

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a second cycle degree (for example a master's degree), or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 second-cycle higher education credits, or
  • acquired, in some other way within or outside the country, substantially equivalent knowledge

In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6, read more here

Selection

  • independently pursue his or her work
  • collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach and
  • analyse and work with complex issues.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in wireless communications and mobile networks for industrial applications. Candidates are expected to demonstrate experience in theoretical research on mobile networks leveraging communication theory, queuing theory or optimization.
A strong background in network simulation (ns-3, OMNET++) is a plus, as well as skills in machine learning.

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.

Target degree: Doctoral degree

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time.
