Large-scale (from hundreds of MW to GW) green hydrogen power plants that are electrolyzed by wind power are being deployed in modern transmission grids. A resilient and cost-effective interconnection of such integrated power plants is critical to the security of power grids.
This PhD project, which is directly co-financed by Hitachi Energy and Shell, will exploit battery energy storage systems (BESS) to enhance the AC interconnections of integrated hydrogen and wind power plants. More specifically, the doctoral student will develop modeling and analysis methods for identifying the dynamics challenges with the integrated wind and hydrogen power plants under a wide range of grid conditions and exploring the potential of BESS in addressing the identified challenges. Grid-forming capabilities of BESS for such integrated power plants will be further developed, considering the latest grid-code requirements and system needs.
