The Division of Micro and Nanosystems at the KTH School of Electrical Engineering invites applications for a Ph.D. student position. We are seeking applicants who have a desire to conduct cutting-edge research within the area of organ-on-a-chip 3D tissue models that mimic human physiology. Such 3D tissue models have important applications in biomedical research and drug development. However, 3D tissue models remain difficult to realize. In this PhD project, we will develop a new generation of 3D tissue constructs targeted at providing a robust solution to both the vascularization and innervation challenges that now hampers the field. Therefore we will focus on creating a physiological model of the interface between nerves and muscles, called the neuromuscular junction. Such a model is highly relevant for studies of normal processes of nerve and muscle interactions but even more so for pathological conditions, pain, inflammation, and muscle dysfunction.
As a Ph.D. student you will be part of an interdisciplinary research team that consists of members with different professional and cultural backgrounds. All projects involve both theoretical and experimental tasks as well as cooperation with other scientific disciplines. Experimental work will be conducted in the KTH laser lab and at KI and KTH SciLifeLab. The projects engage several fellow researchers at KTH and KI and are supervised by at least two senior researchers. The projects will be conducted in close cooperation with the University of Tokyo.
Third-cycle subject: Medical Technology
Supervision: Main supervision Prof. Frank Niklaus (KTH) and Prof. Anna Herland (KI) is proposed to co-supervise the doctoral student.
To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
The successful applicant is expected to hold a M.Sc. degree in biomedical engineering, or a corresponding degree from a major university.
