Third-cycle subject: Engineering Mechanics
The doctoral project is about experimental studies of the aerodynamics around wind turbines and the influence of nearby wind turbines on each other. The Ph.D. student will perform wind tunnel experiments using advanced measurement techniques (e.g., Laser Doppler Velocimetry) to characterize the flow behind wind turbines. The project also includes testing and developing advanced wake models to better predict how wakes behind wind turbines spread, especially in the case of swaying wind turbine towers that occur in floating offshore wind turbines due to surface waves. The project suits candidates with a deep interest in basic fluid mechanics and advanced measurement technology.
The Ph.D. student will be placed in the Fluid Physics Laboratory, an international environment with approximately 15 Ph.D. students working under different research leaders. In total, about 60 Ph.D. students are employed at the department of Engineering mechanics who work on fluid mechanics problems.
Supervision: Jens Fransson, professor in experimental fluid mechanics at the department of Engineering mechanics, KTH, and Stefan Ivanell, professor at Uppsala university as well as guest professor at KTH, are proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission.
To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6, read more here
In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:
Applicants must have an interest in and understanding of fluid physics and modelling.
Good programming skills in Matlab and Labview are meritorious, as well as experimental experience.
After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.
Target degree: Doctoral degree
Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. In the case of studies that are to be completed with a licentiate degree, the total period of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
