School of Architecture and Built Environment at KTH

Job description

The work consist of numerical simulations of ballasted railway tracks using DEM (Discrete Element Method) in 3D, focusing on the dynamic behaviour and risk of ballast instability on bridges. Analyses will be conducted both to compare with previous experiments (small-scale shake table tests) and when performing new large-scale experiments (7 m long bridge). The aim is to increase the understand of the dynamic behaviour of ballast and better estimate the risk of ballast instability and differential settlement due to railway induced vibrations on bridges.
