Glycoscience with specialization in cell wall biochemistry.
Glycoscience is the scientific discipline that studies the biosynthesis, structure and function of complex carbohydrates or "glycans". Carbohydrates are fundamental building blocks of the cell walls from various organisms such as plants, fungi and other organisms, and play an important role in wood biotechnology, sustainable aquaculture and crop protection, food technology, bioprocess technology for biomass, materials for energy and the environment, and biopolymers for health. The specialization in cell wall biochemistry includes the fundamental understanding of carbohydrate biosynthesis and assembly, the molecular and supramolecular structure of carbohydrates in cell walls, cell wall engineering using biotechnological and chemical tools, and the chemo-enzymatic modification and degradation of cell wall carbohydrates.
