Third-cycle subject: Civil and Architectural Engineering, with specialization in Concrete Structures.
The division for Concrete Structures at KTH Civil and Architectural Engineering is in search for a doctoral student to be assigned a project on the properties of shotcrete (sprayed concrete). The properties of the material when used for rock reinforcement and repairs of existing concrete structures will be studied. Shotcrete show different properties compared to corresponding cast concrete due to that the material is applied and compacted using compressed air instead of being cast and vibrated. When spraying, an accelerator is also added to achieve rapid hardening and bond to the substrate. This combined with a higher cement content, smaller aggregate fractions than in cast concrete and the fact that fibre reinforcement is often used gives shotcrete its unique material properties.
The goal is to determine how the properties that shotcrete exhibits in a field environment, for example in a tunnel, relate to the properties that material samples indicate when tested in laboratory. Particular focus is placed on how fibres of different materials interact with the concrete, also in a long-term perspective, which is investigated through testing in the field and laboratory and verified with numerical calculations. The project will result in recommendations for how durable, efficient and safe shotcrete constructions should be designed.
Supervision: Professor Anders Ansell and Dr Andreas Sjölander are proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission.
