Condition monitoring of rail transport systems plays an ever more important role in making the maintenance more efficient and the service more reliable. Condition monitoring paves the way to move from time-based maintenance to condition-based maintenance which can enhance the reliability/availability of the system, bring down costs and increase infrastructure managers’ and train operators’ system condition awareness. A key area is condition monitoring of the dynamic interaction between vehicles and tracks. Your task will be, in close cooperation with rail stakeholders, to propose methods in condition monitoring to detect malfunctions and defects in the system dynamics and quickly and efficiently take proper actions. The work comprises measurements and simulations of the dynamics (vibrations etc) at different operational conditions. Signal processing, big data analysis and machine learning are also key elements in the work. The work will also partly be carried out within the large EU research programme Europe´s Rail.
