Job description

The project aims to advance knowledge on the viability and sustainability of employing vertical farming solutions connected to urban resource streams from a circular economy perspective. Additionally, real-case vertical farms located within different European cities in Sweden, Switzerland and Spain will be assessed to understand the potential urban flows that can be recirculated for and from vertical farms. Responsibilities include assessing the environmental performance of real-case VFs, developing circular strategies, optimizing the use of urban waste resources as VF inputs, and integrating VFs into urban planning. By doing so, we aim to provide guidance and recommendations for integrating VFs into urban planning based on consistent and reliable environmental assessments. The postdoctoral candidate will work within a research project is funded through a grant provided by Formas, the Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development.

The position includes independent research and collaboration with researchers at KTH and IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute working with urban and vertical farming systems. The position will be placed at the Department of Sustainable Development, Environmental Science and Engineering (SEED) at KTH.

Qualifications

Requirements

  •  A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree in environmental engineering. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.

Documented knowledge/working experience within the following topics:

  • Urban / Vertical farming projects and circular economy
  • Knowledge in advanced life cycle assessment tools (i.e., Brightway)
  • Fluently spoken and written English and Spanish since it is essential for your daily work
  • Interest in developing your skills in environmental impacts.
  • Awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with specific focus on gender equality

Preferred qualifications

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline
  • Experience within the urban agriculture and/or closed environment agriculture sector
  • Experience working with urban agriculture topics, through relevant published papers.
  • Experience with hands-on work in urban agricultural settings, design, and experimental development
