School of Architecture and Built Environment at KTH

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Structural Engineering and Bridges

New designs of bridges often involve slender and stiff structures for aesthetic reasons and to reduce material consumption. This may lead to problematic dynamic behaviour of the bridge as a whole or for individual components. Dynamic excitation by moving loads is a well-covered area. However, the influence of wind loads and the aeroelastic effects are less treated in research and bridge design practice. Turbulence, vortex shedding and galloping may cause concerning vibrations and, in the worst case, lead to fatigue deterioration of the structural elements and failure.

This project is aimed at slender bridge components subjected to aeroelastic effects. It will involve dynamic analyses of structures in interaction with wind flows. Moreover, the probability of resonance effects leading to fatigue failure will be one of the major issues to study. The work will involve fundamental studies in the dynamics of structures, computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analyses, and fatigue of materials. The project aims to increase knowledge on wind-induced vibrations of bridge components and result in guidelines for practising bridge engineers.

Supervision: John Leander is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission
