KTH, ITM School

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Industrial Economics and Management

Supervision: Christian Thomann is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission.

The doctoral project aims to devise strategies for mitigating insured losses in residential properties. Improving loss prevention measures is crucial to enhancing resilience and to help Stockholm adapt to the consequences of climate change. In collaboration with the City of Stockholm and its municipal companies the project strives to both identify and implement effective loss prevention. Using highly detailed insurance and administrative data the project aims at discovering patterns of how investments in loss prevention can reduce losses. It is envisioned to actually implement these strategies.

There is a general shortage of empirical analyses of insurance policyholders and claims level data. Studies are commonly using very coarse data or are relying on information by publicly traded firms. There is also a lack of studies looking at how investments into loss prevention impact loss reduction. At the same time there is growing literature suggesting that insurance can play an important role (a) to monitor risks, (b) to internalize and monetarize the costs of risk and to predict losses, in particular concerning climate change, and prevent them using technology.

The doctoral student will be expected to be able to handle large and complex real estate and insurance datasets. The project is financed by digital futures and the City of Stockholm’s insurance company St Erik. The doctoral student is expected to interact with the project partners and take an active role in designing loss prevention measures.
