We are looking for a PhD student who is interested in developing traffic simulation models to enable analysis of future POD-based traffic systems. This PhD project aims to contribute to the state of knowledge in Sweden and Europe, regarding future automated, modular and multimodal POD based mobility systems, that combine the strengths of both planned and flexible (on-demand systems).
Recent research and development in autonomous and modular (“POD”) transport systems for both passenger and goods traffic has provided a number of concepts that provide the key building blocks for future automated, modular, and multimodal mobility systems, that integrate and coordinate rail-based and road-based transports, with the ability to combine goods and passenger transport, and combine the strengths of both planned and flexible (on-demand) systems.
This PhD project contributes to the state of the art, within the Pods4Rail project that is part of the Europe’s Rail programme, by defining concepts and models for a future integrated, automated and multimodal mobility system, as well as modelling its operations, that fulfills the future needs of both passenger and goods transport, using modular technology.
Given the technical nature of the work, we are looking for candidates that can demonstrate good knowledge of and skills in transportation modelling, programming (preferably C++ and Python), optimization, as well as transportation planning, both road- and rail-based.

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
The applicant should have a master's degree (or equivalent) in a field relevant to the research, such as computer science, transport science, engineering physics, sustainable urban planning and design. Knowledge in programming (C++, Python), traffic planning, transport modeling, and machine learning is an advantage.

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. In the case of studies that are to be completed with a licentiate degree, the total period of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
