Third-cycle subject: Fibre- and Polymer Science
The overall goal of this project is to develop a safer method for life estimation (and remaining life) and classification of polymeric components in nuclear power applications. The consequence of "premature" failing seals and cables etc. in a nuclear power plant can have very serious consequences, and safer lifetime estimates (extrapolation from accelerated tests) are therefore central to safety. The goal is therefore to develop a "general" method/methodology for lifetime estimation that mimics reality significantly better than today's methods, and thus is safer and has better precision. The project involves ageing methods, such as gamma irradiation, and a number of characterisation tools of polymeric materials, e.g. IR spectroscopy, electron microscopy and mechanical testing.
A goal in this project is also to involve several parties in the project. We will have a close collaboration with Vattenfall, OKG and Westinghouse, and the intention is also to collaborate with VTT in Finland the BAM institute in Berlin.
