The Department of Sustainable Development, Environmental Science and Engineering (SEED) at KTH Royal Institute of Technology is seeking a motivated and skilled Research Engineer to join the Division of Resources, Energy and Infrastructure. This position, funded by FORMAS, involves working on the Urban Accounting Model (UAM), developed collaboratively by KTH and the City of Stockholm, to enhance its practical application. The role is a unique opportunity to contribute to the forefront of urban resource flow modeling.

Job description

Data Collection and Management:

  • Develop and manage data collection processes necessary for adapting the UAM to the Reflow tool and specific use cases.
  • Transition from top-down to bottom-up data for territorial flows and stocks, focusing on assessing the availability and quality of data sources.

Data Analysis and Model Development:

  • Conduct extensive analyses of municipal data accessibility for the model, identifying critical bottom-up data sources (both static and streaming) and their metadata and quality requirements.
  • Participate in desktop studies for data inventory, analyze other models' data needs, and perform test calculations.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Collaborate with various stakeholders, including Statistics Sweden (SCB), city administrations, and companies, through interviews, workshops, or other engagement methods to gather specific data sets and insights.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A graduate degree or an advanced level (higher education) in the research subject or equivalent competence. 

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience in material flow analysis·        
  • Experience in life cycle assessment ·        
  • Good knowledge of urban metabolism studies
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), experience with database management, and familiarity with software development tools and methodologies.

You have the ability to work both independently and to collaborate in a group and have an awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with specific focus on gender equality.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.
