Third-cycle subject: Biotechnology
Technological development, allows generation of cell models for different organs and by carrying different genetic mutations mimic different disease forms that are representative for the patient population. Such cell models enable studies at the molecular level otherwise impossible to conduct and constitute a biological system suitable for developing and testing the effect of new therapies on individual cells. Understanding how different genetic mutations affect for example the heart's function can be accomplished by creating and studying such models. The need of cell models is evident for rare monogenic disease, like muscular dystrophies. These diseases often affect children, are incurable and characterized by increasing muscle breakdown, breathing difficulties and ultimately heart failure.
The purpose of this project is to evaluate patient-representative cell models for muscular dystrophies by investigating how biological processes are affected by mutations in disease-relevant genes. The project will focus on creating and studying cell models for skeletal muscle and heart. Technological platforms will be used to analyze RNA and proteins, to evaluate how well the cell models mimic the tissues and how the disease varies between patients. The results of the project will eventually improve the development and testing of new drugs including cell therapies.
