New, strong materials from renewable resources are important to replace fossil-based composites. The project is about nanostructured biocomposites from cellulose fibers and their mechanical properties. Those materials are environmentally friendly and have the potential to replace glass fiber reinforced composites. The aim is to tailor nanostructure, investigate the limits of mechanical properties and understand fracture mechanisms using microscopy. The research group works with multifunctional cellulose materials that, for example, combine optical transparency with good mechanical properties. We collaborate with industrial companies, research institutes and strong international research groups. The department (Fiber and Polymer Technology) is one of the strongest polymer departments in Europe and has 11 professors.
