School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health at KTH

Job description

Lignin is a waste-product from the production of paper pulp and is mainly used as fuel. If lignin was instead used in materials, this would greatly reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The project is about modifying lignin chemically for polymers and composites. NMR characterization is important to evaluate modified lignin. The idea is to make lignin reactive and stable for use in polymers, especially as a binder in composite materials from cellulose. The heterogeneous molecular structure of lignin is a challenge in the project. The research group works extensively with multifunctional cellulose materials which also have good mechanical properties. The department (Fiber and Polymer Technology) is one of the largest in Europe in the field of polymers with 11 professors and strong lignin competence.
