School of Architecture and Built Environment at KTH

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Fluid and Climate Theory

This Ph.D. position is integral to the HumanIC European training network. The initiative aims to cultivate early-stage engineers and scientists, adopting a novel, human-centric approach to indoor climate in Healthcare Environments. This position focuses on sustainable methods for designing and managing indoor environments characterized by a favorable thermal climate and minimized airborne particle spread. The approach combines laboratory measurements with numerical simulations, specifically Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and advanced Visualization techniques, including Virtual and Extended Reality (VR and XR), to render the invisible aspects of indoor air quality perceptible and heighten awareness of its health impacts on occupants. The emphasis is on designing and optimizing building ventilation to enhance indoor air quality and thermal comfort, mitigate respiratory disease transmission, and ensure a healthy indoor climate for occupants.

The HumanIC network spans 10 European countries, necessitating mobility as part of this role.

Supervision: Sasan Sadrizadeh, Christophe Duwig, and Mario Romero is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission.

  • acquired, in some other way within or outside the country, substantially equivalent knowledge

In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6, read more here

Special eligibility

  • At least 120 higher education credits from completed courses equivalent to second-cycle studies or in the subject fluid mechanics, aerosol technology, or other subjects deemed directly relevant to the specialization in question, or
  • acquired, in some other way, equivalent knowledge

Normally, a master's degree in the relevant research domain fulfills these requirements.

  • Demonstrating good knowledge of one or more programming languages. Python or MATLAB are seen as highly meritorious.

It is meritorious that the successful candidate has excellent knowledge of fluid mechanics, such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD), aerosol science, and laboratory measurement technology. Also meritorious for the candidate is knowledge of data visualization and experience with developing immersive visualizations.

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.

Target degree: Doctoral degree
