Third-cycle subject: Transportation Science
Transportation is facing a period of significant changes and uncertainties driven by a variety of factors (technologies, mobility norms, climate changes, energy crises). The conventional approach to transportation planning relies on a 'most likely' forecast with limited sensitivity analysis. It has inherent limitations when it comes to addressing significant uncertainties associated with evolving developments.
The Decision Making Under Deep Uncertainties (DMDU) project aims to shift the paradigm from a traditional 'predict-then-act' model, which optimizes based on a single 'best-guess' future (forecast), to a model that stress-tests plans to minimize regrets across a spectrum of potential scenarios (foresight). It will develop the DMDU tool with AI/machine learning data analytics that supports the development of a socio-economically efficient transport system, particularly in a long-distance planning context in Sweden.
