Environmental History with a specialization in Anthropocene History.
Environmental History employs historical and social science methods and theories to study the relationships between humans and their natural environments. Anthropocene history studies the emergence, conditions and consequences of the Anthropocene as the contemporary geological age of humans. The subject combines environmental history with areas of knowledge such as the history of science and technology, environmental humanities, geology and earth system science regarding the period from the 16th century to the present, with an emphasis on the interaction between science, technology, environment and society in the 20th and 21st centuries and a focus on natural resources, climate, energy, biodiversity and toxicity in local, transnational and planetary contexts.
The assistant professor is expected to contribute to the Swedish Research Council’s Center of Excellence for Anthropocene History at the Department of Philosophy and History by participating in interdisciplinary collaborations at the center and the department. The assistant professor is also expected, in collaboration with other universities, nationally and internationally, to apply for research funding and collaborate with the surrounding society.
The position includes teaching at basic level and advanced level at the center and at KTH.
The assistant professor will be given opportunity to develop their independence as researcher and gain accreditation that may allow them to take other teaching positions with higher eligibility requirements (see Chapter 4, Section 12 a of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance). The assistant professor can apply for promotion to associate professor in accordance with Chapter 4, Section 12 c of the Higher Education Ordinance.
An individual who has completed a doctorate or equivalent scientific competence is qualified for appointment as an assistant professor. Candidates who met those qualifications a maximum of five years before the deadline for applying for the appointment as an assistant professor has expired should be prioritized. Other candidates may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to absence due to illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances.

Time limitation:The appointment is for an indefinite term, but no more than six years, and may be extended if, due to the teacher’s absence due to sick leave, parental leave or other special grounds, more time is required to reach the objectives of the appointment. However, the total appointment period may not exceed eight years. The appointment is part of the Tenure Track system at KTH and the assistant professor may apply for promotion to tenured associate professor.
