The main goal of this project is to build a new understanding of how the structure of catalytic surfaces controls their reactivity and, in particular, how structural changes caused by the presence of reactive gases alter catalyst properties. We will achieve this understanding using a new experimental technique developed in the group, near-ambient pressure velocity map imaging, which combines molecular beams, laser spectroscopy and ion imaging to study the kinetics and dynamics of surface reactions at elevated pressures. The results of these experiments can help develop new catalysts and provide benchmark data to test theory.
The project lies on the borders between physical chemistry, experimental physics, and chemical engineering, and could suit a student with any of these backgrounds. The experimental research work will be carried out mainly in the Dept. of Chemical Engineering at KTH. A typical day could involve planning and carrying out experiments in the lab, analysing data, or preparing results for publication. There will also be opportunities to take part in experiments at synchrotron light sources, e.g. MAX-IV in Lund or BESSY, Berlin, and to further develop collaborations with other experimental and theory groups.
This recruitment is connected to the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE, wise-materials.org). WISE, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, is the largest-ever investment in materials science in Sweden and will encompass major efforts at Sweden’s foremost universities over the course of 10 years. The vision is a sustainable future through materials science.
