School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health at KTH

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Chemical Science and Engineering

This PhD position is part of an international project (funded within the Clean Energy Transition Partnership CETP programme) focussing on a unique method to integrate carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) in copper making processes. You as a PhD student will have the opportunity to develop the experimental proof of concept and the reactor scale and process models for using hydrogen in copper making which enables a pathway for CO2 utilization. The research will mainly involve characterization of materials, bench scale reactor experiments, obtaining kinetic data, developing 0D and 1D reactor models and their integration with the steady state process models. Your results will feed into techno-economic analysis of the process and to the roadmap for technology scale-up. You will also interact with other research groups and industry located in Sweden, India, Spain and Romania who will work with other aspects in the project. You will be an ideal candidate for this position if you have obtained (or soon finishing) your master’s degree and have some experience with conducting lab scale experiments and using computational tools like Matlab/Python/Aspen. You are also expected to have strong understanding and interest in chemical reaction engineering and process design and analysis.

Supervision: The PhD student is proposed to be supervised by Shareq Mohd Nazir (main supervisor) and Frederico Marques Penha (co-supervisor) at the Department of Chemical Engineering, KTH. Decisions are made on admission.
