Subject description

The subject covers the development and application of innovative methods that use light to explore biological systems and processes at the molecular, cellular, and tissue levels. It includes experimental light microscopy and image analysis, such as super-resolution and light-sheet microscopy, within various disciplines like biology and medicine.

Duties

The duties include responsibility for the national research infrastructure NMI (National Microscopy Infrastructure) and the research infrastructure ALM (Advanced Light Microscopy) at SciLifeLab, at 50%. The senior lecturer is expected to participate in the development of existing courses at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels within the unit for biophysics. Supervision of bachelor's and master's theses, as well as doctoral supervision, is included. The research should focus on method development within the field. The research must ensure that the research infrastructure, the national infrastructure, and teaching stay aligned with the development within the field. The senior lecturer is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within three years, and if necessary, a language plan will be created in connection with the appointment as support.

Eligibility

Those eligible to be employed as associate professor are persons who have:

  1. have completed a doctorate or possess equivalent scientific expertise or some other professional expertise that is of significance with regard to the subject content of the employment and the duties that are required of the employment, and
  2. demonstrated pedagogical expertise.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria for appointment as an associate professor at KTH shall be the degree of expertise required as a qualification for employment. In addition, the assessment criteria stated in the KTH appointments procedure, section 1.2., apply in relation to the employment profile laid down.

Of highest importance is that the applicant has

  • Scientific expertise in the field, particularly experimental advanced fluorescence microscopy, such as super-resolution and light-sheet microscopy, demonstrated, among other things, by scientific publications at a high international level, the ability to attract external grants, participation in research collaborations, and the ability to innovate and develop the field.  
  • Pedagogical proficiency in the field, demonstrated through high-quality teaching at the undergraduate and/or advanced level.
  • Ability to develop and lead operations and staff, including the ability to drive work within a large-scale research infrastructure. This includes knowledge of diversity and equality issues, with a particular focus on gender equality.

Of second highest importance that the applicant has

  • Collaboration skills and the ability to create and maintain international networks.
  • Ability to collaborate with external stakeholders, such as healthcare, authorities, and companies.
  • Administrative expertise.
