What we offer

Admission requirements

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a second cycle degree (for example a master's degree), or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 second-cycle higher education credits, or
  • acquired, in some other way within or outside the country, substantially equivalent knowledge

In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6.

Selection

In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:

  • independently pursue his or her work
  • collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach,
  • analyse and work with complex issues, and
  • show previous exposure to optimization theory or machine learning fundamentals, and wireless communications. The exposure has to be documented by courses at least at master level; candidates without such evident previous exposure will not be considered.

The candidates are expected to hold or to shortly receive an MSc degree in Mathematics, Engineering Physics, Electrical engineering, Computer Science or similar fields. The candidates must have excellent grades (especially on the theoretical subjects such as optimization theory or statistics or machine learning), very good skills in oral and written communication, and well developed analytical and problem-solving skills.

We are seeking highly motivated PhD candidates with a strong interest in theoretical research and mathematical problem-solving and that are interested in music. The focus of this position is on developing and analyzing mathematical frameworks rather than conducting simulation-based or computational studies.

Candidates who are primarily interested in computer-based simulations or implementations or "test-and-try" approaches are not suited for this position. We are looking for individuals who thrive on tackling mathematical questions and are passionate about advancing knowledge through rigorous theoretical methods in machine learning or optimization theory.

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.

Target degree: Doctoral degree
