School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health at KTH

Job description

During vaginal deliveries, the woman's pelvic floor muscles are often injured, which can lead to pelvic floor dysfunction later in life. However, there is a lack of both knowledge and quantitative imaging techniques for reliable diagnosis and follow-up of treatment of these birth injuries. The aim of this project is to combine structural and biomechanical imaging of the pelvic floor muscles (levator ani muscle) with ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging to improve the understanding of injury mechanisms and to develop new diagnostic tools.

The main tasks of the candidate will be to:

  • Develop a multimodal image database integrating structural and biomechanical imaging of the pelvic floor muscles for improved assessment of birth injuries.
  • Develop deep learning based image processing for pelvic floor muscle assessment.
  • Report results in scientific journals.

This project is a collaboration between Professor Matilda Larsson (matil@kth.se) from the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Health Systems at KTH and Assistant Professor Ruoli Wang (ruoli@kth.se) from the Department of Engineering Mechanics at KTH and clinical collaborators at the Karolinska University Hospital
