Third-cycle subject: Materials Science
This work of the doctoral student will address the development and implementation of methodology for microstructure control in advanced steels. Solid-state phase transformations are crucial for controlling the final microstructure and the properties of steel and so the doctoral student will have the opportunity to gain skills in developing synchrotron X-ray diffraction characterization methodology to reveal and understand microstructure development during in situ thermal treatments. The microstructure development data can then be used to improve on existing thermodynamics-based modelling approaches and as input for microstructure design of new sustainable steels.
In addition to the synchrotron x-ray characterization, atom probe tomography and electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) will be key characterization tools. Furthermore, the Thermo-Calc software package will be used to supplement the experiments.
The doctoral student work is part of a strategic collaborative project between KTH, one of China’s top universities of technology - Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), and Baosteel (Baoshan Iron & Steel Co., Ltd, Shanghai), which is China’s leading steelmaker. The student will therefore have the opportunity to work in an international environment with visits at leading synchrotron radiation facilities as well as extended stays at SJTU.
Supervision: Peter Hedström and Tao Zhou is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission
To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6.
In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:
After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.
Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. In the case of studies that are to be completed with a licentiate degree, the total period of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
