Third-cycle subject: Transport Science with specialization in Transport Systems

Urban logistics and last-mile distribution are evolving rapidly with new business models and emerging technologies. Quick commerce and on-demand delivery are becoming integral to transport systems, increasing the need for sustainable solutions that improve efficiency while reducing environmental impacts, congestion, and social inequalities. Examples include crowdsourced delivery services and parcel lockers.

The Department of Urban Planning and Environment at KTH is seeking a motivated and talented candidate in the field of Transportation. The role offers the opportunity to research innovative urban logistics solutions to address key challenges such as economic viability, equity, and environmental sustainability. Different projects will focus on designing and evaluating new services using optimization algorithms and simulation. Collaboration with industrial partners in the logistics sector will provide opportunities for real-world application and impact.

Supervision: Michele Simoni is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission.

Admission requirements

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a second cycle degree (for example a master's degree), or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 second-cycle higher education credits, or
  • acquired, in some other way within or outside the country, substantially equivalent knowledge

In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6.

Selection

In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. In the selection of the applicants, the following assessment criteria will be used:

Requirements:

  • A MSc. degree in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or Transportation Engineering with relevant courses in optimization
  • Programming skills
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Strong problem-solving skills, creativity, and motivation for pursuing doctoral studies
  • Solid communication skills (verbal and writing) and English proficiency
  • Independently pursue his or her work
  • Ability to collaborate with others
  • Professional approach, including responsibility and commitment to research excellence.
  • Capability to analyse and work with complex issues

Highly desirable:

  • Experience in designing or applying optimization algorithms (e.g., rolling-horizon methods and approximate dynamic programming)
  • Interest in tackling emerging transportation challenges and a passion for making transport more sustainable
  • Critical thinking skills

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. In the case of studies that are to be completed with a licentiate degree, the total period of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
