The subject connects micro- and nanosystems development with societal relevance and allows for creative and interdisciplinary research. Systems development may include, for instance: advanced materials, surfaces and fabrication; distributed sensors and actuators; quantum and photonic systems and interactions; or integration of AI from efficient design to autonomous systems. The needs-driven research has a clear focus on societal resilience in a domain such as health and nutrition, industry and circular economy, climate and energy, environment and ecosystems, electronics and information, transport and space, or security and defense.
The position includes research, supervision, and teaching in the subject area. The assistant professor is expected to apply for research funding, build up a research group, and establish strong collaborations within our division and KTH, as well as in the rest of Sweden and internationally. The assistant professor is moreover expected to contribute to the supervision of students, doctoral candidates, and postdocs, to contribute to the administration and leadership of the division, and to teach at undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels.
The assistant professor will be given opportunity to develop their independence as researcher and gain accreditation that may allow them to take other teaching positions with higher eligibility requirements (see Chapter 4, Section 12 a of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance). Following application, the assistant professor can apply for promotion to associate professor in accordance with Chapter 4, Section 12 c of the Higher Education Ordinance.
An individual who has completed a doctorate or equivalent scientific competence is qualified for appointment as an assistant professor. Candidates who met those qualifications a maximum of seven years before the deadline for applying for the appointment as an assistant professor has expired should be prioritized. Other candidates may also be considered there are special reasons. Special reasons’ refers to absence due to illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances.

Time limitation: The appointment is for an indefinite term, but no more than six years, and may be extended if, due to the teacher’s absence due to sick leave, parental leave or other special grounds, more time is required to reach the objectives of the appointment. However, the total appointment period may not exceed eight years. The appointment is part of the Tenure Track system at KTH and the assistant professor may apply for promotion to tenured associate professor.
