Job description

An eight-month researcher position is available at the Department of Industrial Biotechnology, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, with the group of Assoc. Prof. Zeynep Cetecioglu Gurol. As a researcher, you will be a part of the project, SYMBIOREM, which is funded by EU Horizon. SYMBIOREM project aims to use the bioremediation capabilities of microorganisms, microbiomes, proteins, plants, and animals to remove pollution from the environment. At the Department of Industrial Biotechnology, the research focuses on recovery of phosphorus, bioleaching of metals from the marine sediment and remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH).  The researcher will be responsible for i) upscaling the selected recovery strategies for phosphorus (i.e., precipitation) and metals from the marine sediment, ii) upscaling bioremediation of PAH from the marine sediment and iii) investigating sustainable management strategies of the treated sediment. The main research will be in the laboratory and the researcher will be responsible for co-operation of bioleaching reactors, operation of PAH removal reactors, and recovery of phosphorus and metals.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree in biotechnology with a specialization in environmental biotechnology.[A1]
  • A strong academic track-record, demonstrated by high-quality publications. 
  • Good communication skills and command of written and spoken English as it is frequently spoken at the department
  • Complex problem-solving skills and critical thinking Ability to work interdisciplinarily and independently
  • Good ability to collaborate within a research group Knowledge on bioprocesses design for marine sediment valorization   
  • Experience in bioreactor operation, eutrophic sediments and microbiologal tools·       Experience in PAH bioremediation
  • Experience in phosphorus recovery techniques including precipitation

Preferred qualifications

  • Collaborative international experience
  • Awareness of sustainability concepts
  • Knowledge of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with specific focus on gender equality 

Great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.
