Applied Urban Design with specialization in Spatial Analysis

Subject description

Applied urban design research develops knowledge and understanding of built structures and urban systems and how the built environment affects people’s everyday lives and urban processes. The research includes urban morphology, spatial analysis, and urban space analysis, including space syntax. Through research, Applied urban design develops theories, methods, and approaches that support sustainable and just living environments that are characterized by equal living conditions and a sustainable society designed to meet climate change.

The subject field of applied urban design includes the development of theories and methods as well as research into urban design practice with a close connection to planning. The specialization includes spatial urban analysis, urban form analysis, digitalization, urban morphology, space syntax, and modelling.

The subject field belongs within architecture and concerns the development of knowledge about cities and communities, specifically how built structures and artefacts affect people's everyday life, living conditions and sustainable development. The subject field is cross- and interdisciplinary and integrates technology, natural and social sciences as well as humanities and design.

Duties

Work duties include research and teaching at bachelor, advanced, and doctoral levels in architecture and urban design. Examining responsibilities and pedagogical development work are included.

The research includes the development of the subject applied urban design, including theories and methods, as well as design within urban design and urban planning with a broad theoretical and methodological foundation. Research about urban form models, spatial analysis, and digitalization is included.

The associate professor is expected to independently lead research projects, apply for external research funding and to contribute to and grow the research group and develop collaborations with different competencies within and outside the department, nationally and internationally.. External actors are, for example, public administration, business, civil society or individual actors. Both in research and teaching, the position may include administrative and management assignments.

Eligibility

Those eligible to be employed as associate professor are persons who have:

  1. have completed a doctorate or possess equivalent scientific expertise or some other professional expertise that is of significance with regard to the subject content of the employment and the duties that are required of the employment, and
  2. demonstrated pedagogical expertise.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria for appointment as an associate professor at KTH shall be the degree of expertise required as a qualification for employment. In addition, the assessment criteria stated in the KTH appointments procedure, section 1.2., apply in relation to the employment profile laid down.

Of highest importance is that the applicant has

  • scientific expertise in the subject field, this includes the ability to independently, and in collaboration, apply for and obtain external research grants and run research projects
  • pedagogical expertise in the subject field and has the ability to relate, in teaching, to contemporary challenges in architecture, urban design and urban planning practice including theoretical and methodological issues.

Of second highest importance that the applicant has

  • the ability to cooperate with the outside community for mutual exchange and having acted to ensure that the knowledge and skills found at the university benefit society.
  • expertise in development and leading activities and staff. For that purpose, the individual is to be knowledgeable about diversity and equal opportunity issues, particularly gender equality.

It is also important that the applicant has

  • administrative expertise ability to collaborate.
