Third-cycle subject: History of Science, Technology and Environment
The Division of the History of Science, Technology and the Environment is recruiting one doctoral student within "environmental impact of AI" to be conducted within the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program – Humanity and Society (WASP-HS).
Project: AI Planetary Futures: Climate and environment in Silicon Valley's AI paradigm
This project analyzes the climate and environmental aspects of Silicon Valley-based general-purpose AI systems developed by Big Tech companies, specifically examining how companies' actions relate to their environmental impact. The research will investigate how perceptions of human environmental impact change with accelerating AI implementation.
Supervision: Adam Wickberg is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission.
The doctoral student will be affiliated to the WASP-HS Graduate School. The Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program – Humanity and Society is a national research program in Sweden. The vision of WASP-HS is to foster novel interdisciplinary knowledge in the humanities and social sciences about AI and autonomous systems and their impact on human and social development.

Target degree: Doctoral degree
Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. In the case of studies that are to be completed with a licentiate degree, the total period of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
