Job description

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher with a strong research interest in underwater communication, with a particular focus on acoustics, directivity, and experimental studies. The position is aimed at candidates who wish to conduct advanced research at the intersection of theory and practice in the marine environment.

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will work on the development, testing, and scientific analysis of acoustic underwater communication systems. The work includes both analytical and numerical modelling as well as experimental studies, ranging from controlled laboratory environments to full-scale field experiments in marine settings. The research is conducted in close collaboration with national and international partners. At KTH, there is a large and active research group working within the field of underwater technology.

The position offers excellent opportunities to participate in and take responsibility for field trials at sea, providing hands-on experience with real-world experimental campaigns.

Examples of duties:

  • Research and development of acoustic communication systems for underwater applications
  • Modelling and analysis of acoustic propagation, directivity, and radiation patterns in marine environments
  • Design, execution, and evaluation of experimental studies, including field measurements
  • Advanced signal processing and analysis of acoustic measurement data
  • Development and implementation of hardware and algorithms, including FPGA-based solutions
  • Scientific publishing in international journals and conferences
  • Collaboration with researchers, engineers, national and external European defence and research partners
  • Participation in, and responsibility for, field trials

Qualifications

  • Documented research expertise in acoustics and/or underwater systems
  • Experience with experimental work and data analysis
  • Excellent ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English

Preferred qualifications

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline
  • Experience in underwater acoustics or marine experimental research
  • Experience with FPGA programming or real-time systems
  • Experience in international research projects (e.g. EU-funded projects)
  • Knowledge of acoustic propagation, directivity, and radiation patterns
  • Experience in signal processing for communication or sensor systems
  • Practical experience with measurement equipment, sensors, or acoustic transducers
  • Research expertise
  • Teaching abilities
