School of Engineering Sciences at KTH

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Vehicle Engineering

Carbon fibre reinforced polymers (CFRP) are versatile materials. Our idea is to use carbon fibres to carry load and as electrodes in a structural battery. We use a lithium ion conductive polymer electrolyte matrix for mechanical transfer between fibres and for lithium ion between the electrodes. For the development of this new multifunctional materials a multidisciplinary team of scientists combine expertise in electrochemistry, polymer technology, composite materials, physics and mechanics, has been established in the past few years.

This Ph.D.-project will focus on development of additional functionalities that can be utilized in a structural battery; sensing, actuation, shape change and energy harvesting - a truly multifunctional material. All this will be performed in close collaboration with other Ph.D.-students and senior researchers from three different departments at KTH working on similar topis in a truly multidisciplinary team. All doctoral students are expected to learn each other's disciplines and to work together both theoretically and experimentally.

Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by: Professor Dan Zenkert and Professor Göran Lindbergh.
