KTH Royal Institute of Technology, School of Architecture and Built Environment

Project description

Six doctoral positions are being advertised simultaneously within the School of Architecture and the Built Environment’s focus on digitalization and sustainability.

Third-cycle subject: Sustainable buildings

The Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering wishes to hire a PhD student for a research project on how reuse can be implemented and optimized to balance economic and environmental benefits. The project is interdisciplinary and has a connection to previous and ongoing research at the School of Architecture and the Built Environment. As a doctoral student, you will collaborate both with researchers from different departments at KTH and have contacts with construction and real estate actors in Sweden.

We will explore how digital workflows can support different stakeholders in decisions regarding the reuse of building materials and components. This includes processes for material inventory and quality assurance as well as effective methods for analyzing how reuse in different situations can affect costs, use of virgin material resources and carbon dioxide emissions. An important aspect is to examine different stakeholders' information needs, driving forces and business models to understand how they can effectively participate in the reuse process and which digital user interfaces can be used to collect, share and communicate information for reuse in a practice.

Supervision: The doctoral student will be placed at the Royal Institute of Technology and is proposed to be supervised by Associate Professor Kjartan Gudmundsson and Associate Professor Malena Havenvid.
