Third-cycle subject: Industrial Engineering and Management

Digitization is having a broad impact today. Modern technologi for Artificial Intelligence (AI) is radically reforming a number of industries and sectors of society. This project aims to study the strategies and business logics of the emeriging AI-driven companies that come with this technology shift and the threat and opportunities they bring to industry. What role will these companies play and how will AI transform incumbent industry? The intention is to study different cases of AI-based business logics, aiming to create an indepth understanding of the effects of AI-technologies on industrial operations.

The PhD position is part of the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program on Humanities and Society (WASP-HS), which aims to realize excellent research and develop competence on the consequences and challenges of artificial intelligence and autonomous systems for humanity and society. This 10-year program is initiated and generously funded by the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation with 660 million SEK. In addition to this, the program receives support from collaborating industry and from participating universities. Major goals are more than 10 new faculty positions and more than 70 new PhDs. The WASP-HS graduate school provides foundations, perspectives, and state-of-the-art knowledge in the different disciplines taught by leading researchers in the field. Through an ambitious program with research visits, partner universities, and visiting lecturers, the graduate school supports forming a strong multi-disciplinary and international professional network between PhD students, researchers and practitioners. It provides added value on top of the existing PhD programs at the partner universities, providing unique opportunities for students who are dedicated to achieving international research with societal relevance..

Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by Professor Mats Engwall (main supervisor) and assistant professor Emrah Karakaya.

Eligibility

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

• passed a degree at advanced level,
• completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
• acquired, in some other way within or outside the country, substantially equivalent knowledge

• Applicants must hold, or be in the process of obtaining, a Master's degree in Industrial Engineering and Management, Innovation Management, or equivalent.
• Furthermore, the applicant must have strong academic qualifications.

• have a professional approach and
• analyse and work with complex issues,

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
