The project aims to characterize novel sustainable and bio-based aqueous organic electrolytes based on lignin for redox flow battery (RFB) systems. The bio-based compounds considered for this project are produced from wood and so, abundant, low-cost and non-toxic and have the potential to drastically reduce the cost of energy storage for stationary applications compared to all-vanadium RFBs or Li-ion batteries. In the project, the bio-based compounds will be chemically modified using a novel depolymerization method developed at Lund University. The compounds will be optimized to generate suitable redox species with high water solubility and electrochemical reversibility. At KTH the focus will be to characterize the modified bio-based redox species electrochemically both in conventional electrochemical cells and in a RFB setup. The project will be performed at division of Applied Electrochemistry, Chemical Engineering KTH and leans on a close collaboration between Chemical Engineering at Lund University and Fiber and Polymer Technology at KTH.
