The Centre for ECO2 Vehicle Design, situated at the Department of Aeronautical and Vehicle Engineering within the School of Engineering Sciences, performs multidisciplinary research in order to enable resource efficient vehicle design in the future. Our main research focus is on the vehicle as part of the wider transport system, taking into account requirements set on all system levels. The Centre for ECO2 Vehicle Design collects a broad competence within the fields of vehicle concepts, lightweight structures, sound and vibrations, vehicle aerodynamics, rail vehicle technology and road vehicle dynamics.

The Centre for ECO2 Vehicle Design is a close collaboration with the Swedish based vehicle industry and more information regarding the Centre and the partners can be found at the website www.eco2vehicledesign.kth.se.

Job description

The Centre for ECO2 Vehicle Design is now looking for a PhD-student in Multi-functional body structures optimization for resource efficient vehicle concepts.

The project is focussed on increasing the level of sustainability in a product via integration of functionality, simplification of design and weight reduction in several steps. The aim is to create a methodology which breaks from the traditional design paradigm in which assumedly independent sub-functions are designed separately and then assembled to perform higher level functional requirements.

The objective of the current project is to investigate aspects of integration and balancing of structural functions which are attributed to partitioned regions and domains that have well-identified functional interdependencies. The approach aims at enabling  solutions that more efficiently share the same physical space, at lowest embedded energy  while maintaining the same overall goals. This is studied in the context of multi-functional design using topology, property, and size optimisation for structures with e.g. combined performance in acoustic, structural, thermal, fire resistance etc.

This inherently requires a multidisciplinary coupling in the problem set up as well as in the optimisation approach. The use of numerical methods for modelling of the physical phenomena controlling a certain functionality allow for complex models to be built and analysed.

Qualifications

For this position it is required to have a Master of Science in Engineering Physics, Engineering Mechanics, Vehicle Engineering, or equivalent with a specialization in acoustics, vibrations or solid mechanics, and documented skills related to numerical methods or computer science and an interest in sustainability issues. In addition to the traditional academic merits, a relevant degree project, international experience, and language skills are regarded as advantageous qualifications.

Applicants must be strongly motivated for pursuing research, should also have the ability to work independently as well as in collaborations and perform critical analysis as well as possessing good levels of cooperative and communicative abilities.
