KTH, School of Architecture and Built Environment

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Civil and Architectural Engineering

A common position between KTH and RISE Research Institutes of Sweden on sensor technology for advanced maintenance of critical infrastructures like ports and airports.

A paradigm shift is occurring in how cargo ports approach their role within the transport sector and society. To ensure a system that is optimized with respect to its overall energy usage, the ‘physical roads’- and ‘digital operating system’- infrastructures of ports must be further connected. Reduced terminal down-time, improved maintenance planning and flexibility will give large energy reductions: faster cargo handling, reduced ship-in-port times, more sustainable material use and enhanced collaboration between transportation modes and port terminals. The project focuses on the case of the Stockholm Norvik Port, a new Swedish freight port to start its operations in 2020. The project investigates the most promising smart roads and connects these with the supply chain infrastructure via a ‘virtual twin’ of the port. Systemic cargo port energy optimization will be done via user case scenarios with multiple stakeholders and a detailed energy optimization road map will be formed.

Within this project, KTH and RISE have started a collaboration that focuses on the development of our future ports in which smart roads play an important role.

The research and development will be performed on integrated sensor technology, distributed energy harvesting, material science, algorithms for handling and interpreting the generated data and integrating this within the logistics of the port. As the project is highly multi-disciplinary, a number of positions will be opened on Licentiate, PhD and Post-Doc level to form a creative environment and a diverse project team that will be capable of handling the complexities of the project.

For this position, we are looking for a person who has a M.Sc. or M.Eng degree focused on sensor technology and/or data science. Knowledge and interest in other technical subjects such as material and building technology, computational simulations, structural mechanics, transport logistics or sensor fusion and artificial intelligence are a benefit.

As many partners are involved in the project, you will also be working in different academic and industry groups and may therefore have a work place at Stockholms Hamnar in Stockholm, Norvik Port and Nynas AB in Nynäshamn, RISE office in Kista as well as at KTH Architecture and Civil Engineering campus on Valhallavägen and the Health Informatics and Logistics group at the KTH Flemingsberg campus.

The PhD Candidate will have a shared position, with a 50% appointment at KTH and 50% at RISE.
